Hi all
Recently started helping out senior swim training, following head coaches program i look after 2 lanes, the problem i have is the swimmers dont seem to want to be there, every set is an effort to get them motivated, stopping going to toilet faking injuries, messing with goggles ETC. Has anyone got any ideas or had similar experiences of what i can do to get them enjoying their swimming?
Thx

Hello!
That's a great question and I'd say that every coach might be put in that exact spot. There are probably at least a million ways to motivate an athlete, but as a coach, it's your job to find out the right way for your team. Here are few tricks I'm using from time to times:

- Tell them motivating stories about someone who wanted to achieve something and finally did. You might even wanna make them feel that they are a part of the storie. Of course try to keep the ending "happy" or "succeeded". Youtube is full of those vids :) PEP TALK :D

- Relays. Relays are always a fun way to bring a team together. That way nobody can "quit" because of the TEAMSPIRIT :) Catch up relays have worked really wel for me!

- Positive feedback. When they succeed in something (even minor things) let them know about it. "Wow Michael, your breaststroke kick starts to look like Brendan Hansen's, I think we're gonna be ready for the olympics". My masters can't stop laughing to that joke :P INC: A HUGE SMILE :)))))

- For my masters I just come up with a workout that includes: warm up + tech work and one set or 2-3 smaller sets. Here in Finland a lot of coaches tend to mix up the practise with bunch of different totally unrelated stuff. Swimmers DO notice when a workout "makes no sence". That way, when you're making them to do one "bigger" set, their "fighting" mode turns on and they really try to push it through, but again think about starting with something easier, something they should be able to swim easily (back to the positive feedback + succeeded feeling). A CHALLENGE :)

So here's some stuff. Now, play with these and try to find their weak spot for the sport. Some of these might work, some maybe won't. But planting an idea in their head can really make the difference. Then just let the idea grow (I think they even made a movie about this idea-thing ;)) Good luck, Cheers!
