Your arms should pull through with your body rotation. Basically you can swim with whatever cadence you want, but when your right arm is pulling it should be maximizing it's power not only with your arm shoulder back and chest muscles, but with your core muscles as you rotate to your left side. Pretend to swim really slow on land and watch what your arms are doing, then add your roll and try to get yourself to roll as you pull your forearm and hand back. |

I was actually wondering something similar. I have seen some people say that the hips should initiate the roll, so that your hands start moving after your opposite hip starts dropping (ie right hand extended, you pull shortly after your left hip starts dropping down). I haven't found a nice analogy yet to sum up what the timing should be (like Mr. Santo's Pizza analogy for breastroke today.) Though some people say that your hips should be like the conductor of the orchestra, the orchestra being your whole stroke. |

I personally say that you should never think about your hips. Once you start thinking about them they start to do weird stuff, like the "hula" where they rock from side to side instead of rolling from side to side.
