O.K. you triathleets....tell me...during the swimming part using freestile......do you use legs or not ....and what's the best way????...generally??? The Dad |

Nio personal experience unless you count one 800m, 40k, 10k event 15 years ago when I'd just learnt to swim (very slowly!) but my son just uses his legs to balance during the swim in order to save something for the cycle and run and he made European Age Groups last year. He was a distance Medley swimmer and has to work hard NOT to use his legs after his pool swimming days. |

I use my legs moderately. I don't do full out hard kicking, but I believe I use my legs more than a lot of triathletes. And I still do good on the bike, and I am an ace at the run. That's my strong suit. |

No. Especially if you are wearing a wetsuit. Unless you come from a strong swim background, the oxygen used to the propulsion gained is not worth it. However, kick the last 50 yards to get some blood into your legs. Otherwise, you may fall over when you stand up because of a drop in blood pressure. Happens every race. |

Drop in blood pressure...is that why I got dizzy when I got out of the water at the Strawberry Fields triathlon back in July? Only time I've really experienced that. Would have sworn I was kicking coming in anyhow. Hmmm. Maybe not. |

I agree with Bob. If you are not a very good freestyler too much kick uses up to much oxygen and therefore (what is even worse) raises blood lactate to high levels in an early stage of the race. The gain in speed is not worth the exhaustion.
