I am beginning training for a sprint triathlon and am new to the realm of multi-sport. It has been years since I have had to swim face down and work on breathing. I have been struggling for a few pool sessions to get my breathing down. I constantly feel like I am not getting a full exhale and thus feel short of breathe. Any suggestions on drills or advice to improve exhale and feel like I am fully inhaling/exhaling? |

If you scroll to the bottom of the page, to our "underwater tag cloud"... look for "breath control", or "breathing". Click on anything like that and you'll get a bunch of stuff to sort through. Here's the pages I got when I clicked on the "breath control" & "breathing" link below:
Post questions directly on any of those pages as well, and we'll do our best to help or answer. |

Have you tried breathing out explosively the moment before you turn to breathe in? As a non-swimmer till I was 37 it was the hardest thing I found so now I exhale steadily until my hand hits the water on the breathing pull then explosively get rid of the remainder through my mouth so when I turn to breathe in there is room for the incoming air. can I also suggest you might be kicking too fast which uses up the oxygen more quickly than anything else. If that's the case, relax the kick and enjoy being able to breathe more as if you were just strolling along. |
