I had an athlete of mine mention she got very nauseous during her first open water swim of the season. I've never had that happen to me before... Any tips on what to do or what may cause it? She asked about a possible pill she could take, but I advised against that...just doesn't seem like the best idea to be drugged up going into the open water. Thanks. |

Man... did I miss the boat on this one. Depending on the location, which sounds like it was an ocean based swim... there may be nothing you can do... OTHER than take some dramamine. However, you're absolutely correct that you don't want to take anything new prior to a race... so some testing should be done. I'm not sure if Dramamine makes someone drowsy or not, but sea sickness is certainly something that probably won't be overcome simply with technique adjustments. Then again, I remember getting pretty sick while on a small boat with a friend in the middle of Lake Erie once. The only thing I could think of was to dive off the side of the boat with full lungs... and swim around underwater for a while. Obviously, I'd pop up for a breath when I needed it... but there are less waves 10 feet down. :) Doesn't make for a very fast swim that way though. |
