Swimming Question of the Week - Coaches - November 3, 2010
Almost a survey, but a very simple question posed to the coaches who show up at the site:
How many days off do you get per week?

Days off?....from work or coaching???.....The Dad |

Coaching. |

Ditto. Work is 7 / 7 if you take into account both the main job and the fun job! If you just mean coaching, we do 3 days per week (I also coach elsewhere for another 2 nights every other week). Until 7th August this year I had done all 450 sessions on the trot over the last 3 years (allowing for days we don't swim on Bank Holidays). 7th August ws my daughter's wedding so we gave me 3 days off! Wouldn't want it any other way |

Days off? Those would be nice. Depends on the time of year, but most of the year I get a day off about once every two weeks on average. I am a fairly young head coach and it can be hard to have a social life working evenings and weekends almost all year. But, I didn't choose my line of work for the hours. I chose something I knew I would enjoy going at each day. |

I WILL REPLY INSTEAD OF MY COACH , ONE DAY PER WEEK , BUT IN THIS DAY HE PREPARES TO THE NEXT WEEK , |

Uh...I do now 2 evenings and 2 morning sessions...and the meets....so...I have a day off from coaching every vriday, saturday and sunday....although I thought that coaching is a live fulltime job. It's not only swimmers you coach..... |
Absolutely, Dad! |
One day away from the pool, unless there is a meet. On that day there is a lot of admin stuff that goes on. |
Not really a day off from work... Ben said it best: there's one day away from the pool, except on 'special' weekends - besides the meets, we have HOD meetings some weekends, or workshops, etc... When those days away from the pool happen, it's usually time to catch up on admin work. |

I try to give myself one day off a week, but that has only happened a few times in 3 seasons at this head coaching job. I don't think there's every really a day off for a coach. But isn't that why we choose this? I wouldn't have it any other way, as stressed or overwhelmed as I get, when i step on the pool deck, none of that matters :) |

The reason we do it is that buzz as you get poolside, absolutely right, Heather |

So as a recent age group swimmer thinking of getting into some coaching (why? because I want to try something new/give back to a sport/watch people improve) these answers make it all seem a bit intimidating...how does a coach manage a family life, social life, keep fit and healthy as an example to their swimmers, get time for continuing education..etc etc...ie be a balanced individual. Perhaps this is a question for another discussion...? |
Sorry - I'm terminologically-challenged! I'm a masters swimmer... |

Too funny alleycat. We're all still age-groupers... just our ages are a bit higher. ;) |

Wait; are we allowed days off?! I had no idea! I coach 5 evenings /week although our team also can train on Sat. My other job is teaching swimming which I do 7 days/ week!! A day off? Not so much...

We are a group of swimmers who swim really fast, and like to help others learn how to reach their competitive potential in the area of professional swimming.
