Swim Question of the Week - July 28, 2010

Now that the Kingdom swim if over, and lots of travel out of the way... I'm looking for either support, or reassurance for the following question:

After a big race, meet, or swim, how long of a break do you take at the end of a season?

I know in reality, I didn't prepare enough to deserve a break... but it seems I'm taking one already. :)

For me, I like to keep swimming during a break, but it's swimming without a pressure valve...without having to do a certain amount of yardage or speedwork or timed intervals. At the same time, I'm starting to look toward the "A" event for the next season, and taking a week or two to figure out how to approach the training and how to add something new to the training. But definitely keep swimming or biking or running or something during the break; otherwise, it's too hard to get back into it.

I think it depends on the intensity of your training beforehand. We swim 52 weeks a year but in fairness the summer (end July to end August) is really about some steady distance swimming and lots of things like relays mixing the squads during training). Just keeps the rough off before season starts in September. But then again we only get 4.5 hours (3 sessions) a week.

Take long enough to let the soreness leave, both mental and physical. I took way too long, 30 years. Now I'm facing my first meet in decades and wondering, should I taper?

I don't take a real break. I stay in the water but do only easy and fun stuff (and only once a day not even every day). Usually it is for a month.

We have a meet almost every week!!!!.....so where is the break???...hahahaha.....

One thing I'd like to add from my experience in soccer specifically is that breaks are wonderful to incorporate.This is not to rest your muscles, but to give your muscles a memory wipe. My personal trainer who was the trainer for manchester city f.c. instructed me to take a break every 12 weeks from training. Lol, I didn't play for man.city just to clear it up!
Short breaks are used as a reset button for your muscles. Take a one week break every 12 weeks to make your muscles forget how strong/fast they are and to avoid hitting walls in the progression of getting stronger and faster. When you come back to the pool a week later you'll be able to raise your game, even if just slightly. Start training a week later and you'll get the same results with less work, which means even more progression if you apply the same workout. I believe this would apply to swimming as well.
