Will Michael make it?

Oh YES...he will make it. In my opinion the biggest hurdle for him now is the 100 fly. Crocker really wants it and will be completely rested while for Michael it will be his 16 event...but he will be so motivated that he will make it.

I thought he looked to be really tired on the medal stand for the 200 Free, or maybe since he's Michael Phelps he was visualizing his next race ;-)

Responded Aug 12, 2008 05:47PM

I have always doubted it was possible. Just this year I stopped saying that. He always finds a way to win. I honestly think he's going to do it. It's very exciting.

I read an article in Newsweek Magazine recently where I learned that Speedo had their offer of 1 million dollars for 7 gold medals insured in '04. This time around, however, the company is on the line for the whole amount because they couldn't find an insurance company that would cover them. What does that tell you?

I think that this is Michael's best opportunity for achieving this tremendous accomplishment; that being said, I hope that he gets only seven gold medals. I am a huge Ryan Lochte fan and think that although the announcers feel that his hardest events are now past him and it is only a matter of putting in the swims, I believe that his greatest test will come against Ryan in the 200 IM Michael does his best the longer the event, it allows him to use those turns and he builds momentum with each one. I think that the 200IM will go down as one of the greatest races ever. If Michael wins, then I will be disappointed for Ryan, but will still be happy for Michael because no one deserves it more.

C'mon madmallard64....
You don't need to be disappointed for Ryan...he is racing against the best athlete ever. Forget about Muhammed Ali, M.Jordan, Maradona, Pelé and all their clones...there has never been an athlete so dominant in his sport than Michael Phelps and he will win 8 golds!

Responded Aug 12, 2008 08:51PM

Well Thomas, we all have our favorite athletes, and Ryan went to the Olympics not for Silver, but for Gold. Whatever Ryan gets, if it's not Gold, there will be something inside of him that will be disappointed. It will temper with age, but I bet that fire for Gold doesn't die until he retires from the sport. Madmallard can feel back for him... just as I have felt bad for my friends who didn't do what they wanted... we just can't be disappointed IN them. Totally different. :)

Phelps, I think will beat Crocker. He's more consistent and has developped into a great sprinter in just the past year (his 400 free relay split after all broke Lezak's American record, Phelps wen 47.51). Worst case scenario he goes home with 7 golds and a silver (because even if he loses the 100 fly he swims the prelims).

I guess now it's easier to assume Michael will succeed. I had a (small) doubt after watching the 200 butterfly because he had seemed a little off. But then I discovered he had water in his goggles which probably hindered him. His semi final on the 200 medley was in cruise control but then so was Lochte's. I guess this final will one for the ages in final. I've just looked the results on the 100 butterfly, I don't see any stress in this one. Michael finished 50"87 at the feet of the first qualifier but with a VERY slow 50 (he was 6th and one full second slower then the eventual fastest qualifier). His second 50 was tremendous.
So yes I see him with 8 golds around the neck.

Yes, if he can get past Locke in the 200 IM.

Responded Aug 15, 2008 06:01AM

The anticipation is toooo much! I love the whole concept, and its great to see swimming getting its much deserved spotlight. Has anyone else noticed more swimmers in the pool? I think the olympics is getting everyone (even the dry landers) excited. GO SWIM! ;)

Responded Aug 15, 2008 03:25PM

With Locke out if the way as Phelp's biggest challenge is to swim a smart 100 fly. I love watching history in the making. I just hope the casual sports caster or sports writer who only cares about swimming during Olympic years do not deminish Phelp's accomplishments by knocking Phelp's competition as not being that good or giving the LZR suit all of the credit.

Responded Aug 16, 2008 08:28AM

Well how about this 100 fly final !!!!! Talk about good timing at the wall. Watching on TV I really thought he had lost this final.
Way to go Michael.

Responded Aug 17, 2008 08:43AM

Well, this is it. Michael is the all time medal winner in Olympic sport: 8 gold in one Olympicgame, 14 overall. Nothing more to add, it's just awesome. In general these games were incredible for swimming. Just greatt. It's all on DVD to watch again and again.

Responded Aug 17, 2008 06:23PM

Hi Phillipe...
Please tell me where can I get THAT DVD!!!!!!!! Hurry up!!!

Responded Aug 18, 2008 06:29PM

Hi Tomas,

Sorry I meant I've taped all the heats and finals on DvD (along with rowing and gymnastic two other sports I love to watch). That gives 9 DvD. Sorry if I have given you false hopes.

Responded Aug 18, 2008 10:02PM

No problem Phillipe...I will find something somewhere!!!! you can bet on that one.
