Pic of the Week - May 18, 2007

Posted by Glenn Mills on May 18, 2007 08:58AM (3,145 views)

This week's pic is of a fairly typical freestyle stroke. However, there are SO many things RIGHT with what the swimmer is doing, it's hard to write it all up. See how many we can come up with, but each person should list only one.

If you find something she's doing wrong, keep that to yourself, let's rather, like teachers, focus on JUST the positive for this once. We usually point out what's wrong; let's take this opportunity to point out what's RIGHT.

- great head position
- good hip rotation
- good, clean hand entry (bubbles under hand rather than above hand)

(lol ... just graduated from uni hence some time on my hands to be the first to post :))

I do believe we are only supposed to write one :( AHH!!

I'm going to have to pick my favorte for efficiency!

* Whole body rotation allowing for great streamline all the time!

oops :(

How could I bet upset if more than one was written? It's our first test of the "one" thing, so no worries. Just finishing school probably has you in the habit of giving COMPLETE answers... so no worries.

I'm gonna pick my favorite here, she's not such a tall swimmer, and we've been working on a straight arm recovery for a while now... it was great to see the timing of the hands out front. Still just a bit of front quadrant, but not overt. I like it.

Thanks Glenn :)
....considering I should be now good at reading instructions....hehe. I probably got a little holiday lethargy.

This is a great demostration on powerful exhalation! Look at those bubbles coming out of her nose! Very efficient breathing!

nice catch of the water. i love to see a high elbow pulling water.

She has a nice hand position, relaxed- not stiff, a nice line from the elbow through her fingertips, and her wrist is not cocked or flexed, very clean! Some swimmers try to do way too much with their hands, swivelling and turning constantly, like a little "hand dance", lots of wasted motion. This looks just right.

nice streamlining of legs and toes, but now, shouldn't the arms and legs be opposing one another, it seems the right arm and leg are both high and the left arm and leg are both low- not trying to point out errors, but just trying to learn.

Responded May 21, 2007 01:10PM

yikes, my bad! (how embarassing!)when stroking 6 or so counts with my legs this morning to 2 strokes with my arms, I realized the legs and arms won't aways be opposing, duh, I musta been thinking of my step class!

Check out the 8 beat kick video on here, can't remember who it is of... but yea I try 8 beat kick and it doesn't make sence to me. I gotta have my down kick left leg and right arm enter haha it feels so right! Maybe thinking outside the box is what can make me even faster though....

Also since she does have some front quadrant going on I would imagine the kick would change a bit too! Still it must be accomplishing it's job with that great whole body rotation! I'm still sticking with the thing I like! hah!
